Interview With An Artist: Dr. Jo Campbell

Updated: May 13, 2023

o Name and Medium: Dr. Jo Campbell, glass artist

o Explain what you do in 100 words or less: “Glass is formed by heating a mixture of dry materials to a viscous state, then cooling the ingredients fast enough to prevent a regular crystalline structure. When glass cools, the atoms become locked in a disordered state before they can form neither a liquid nor a solid, glass is its own state of matter.”

A challenge to work with, the atoms get mixed up when heated. It takes persistence to get the image to land where you want it. It is like a discovery every time the kiln is opened for glass has its own way of doing things.

o What role do you believe an artist has in society?

I like this statement… An artist can lead, follow, uplift or provoke with their work.

o What medium do you most enjoying doing?

I have worked and enjoyed many mediums, starting in oils at 10 years old. Glass drew me as a profession in 1975.

o What’s your most memorable experience as an artist?

I was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Award for the creation of the stained-glass windows in the Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery. It uplifted my career.

o What’s your favorite artwork by another?

Chagall’s blue windows at the Charte Cathedral in France. Having visited many Gothic Churches around the world, there is none that impacts the way this blue environment enters your very being.

o What memorable responses have you had to your work?

The fun ones are all the tourists that come into the Arrowhead Gallery from all over the world. My glass is being worn in so many countries as far away as Tahiti and Mongolia!

o What is your dream project?

I really don’t have a particular dream project. I just like working in glass and am happy when others find it appealing.

o Who are three artists you’d like to be compared to?

I don’t have any interest in being compare to others. I do my thing and am happy just creating.

o What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

If you are going to do it, do it the very best you are able.
